Now, if you are thinking about expanding to numerous hosts, want the high-availability options, would like to migrate VMs between hosts, implement any kind of clustering functionality, need 3rd party backup/DR integration, then buying some licenses is the way to go on this as you will not be able to get any of these features with the free version.
If you don't need any kind of centralized administration, any 3rd party backup functionality, any high availability or virtualized storage.įor very small shops that have no intention of going beyond one host, a standalone ESXi install is what I usually recommend. For certain situations, the free version of ESXi works just fine.
